Reader’s Question:

I ran into another vehicle backing into a parking lot 3 days ago. It only put a small dent in their vehicle, and nothing on mine. I thought maybe I could just pay for it in cash. Is that better than filing an insurance claim with my SR-22 auto insurance certificate provider in Juneau, Alaska?

Yes, it could be, however any time you choose to pay another driver for injuries or damages in cash rather than going through your SR-22 auto insurance in Juneau, Alaska, you are making a gamble which could be very dangerous. You are talking about a stranger. You do not know what they will do with your money. Maybe they will spend it and then file an insurance claim later. Maybe they will go to your car insurance company and claim more damages than what are really there. We cannot say for certain.

In addition, you do not really know if the damages are as small as you say it were.Usually small accidents can trigger big internal problems in a car which would not show up until later, by which time it would be too late for you to have your money back. Same thing goes for injuries. You may not feel it at the time of the accident, but later you could begin having backaches , headaches and so on, and then you will be paying for all of that. It is best to always just file an insurance claim with your SR-22 auto insurance if you are in an accident with another motorist.
