5 Tips for New Car Insurance Buyers
Reader’s Question:
I just got a car from my dad and I want to buy car insurance for it. This is my first time to buy car insurance though. Any tips to help me out?
Nadir
Anchorage, AK
Buying the right kind of car insurance can seem like a daunting task, especially for new car insurance buyers like you. However, the following tips should make it easier to get car insurance coverage that is both affordable and reliable:
1. Know Your State Requirements – Visit your state’s Department of Insurance website (Google it) first before purchasing a policy. Most states have minimum coverage requirements that you have to meet and this website will be a good start to finding out about these requirements.
2. Compare Rates Online – You want to know the latest rates available so go online and use insurance comparison websites (like this one) and get a free quote check. This allows you compare offers coming from many different providers simultaneously, therefore maximizing your chances of finding the cheapest rates.
3. Pick the Best Company – Independent rating agencies like A.M. Best and J.D. Power rates the performance of many different companies. Their website publishes this kind of information for free. Using this information can help you pick the best-overall providers to go to.
4. Get a Policy that Suits YOU – If you drive an old clunker avoid purchasing too much comprehensive coverage since it’s not cost-effective. Study your policy carefully and keep an eye out for coverage you may already be getting somewhere else.
5. Look for Discounts – Discounts are a plenty and there’s a good chance you’ll qualify for at least one. Always ask prospective insurers about discount options and how to be eligible for them.
Teen Auto Insurance Alaska AK
Reader’s Question:
I was shopping around here in Alaska for teen auto insurance and was surprised that most of them are really expensive. Why is this so?
Bert
Anchorage, AK
Bert, you should not really be surprised to see the prices of auto insurance premiums for teen drivers because that is just normal. Even if you go online and ask for instant quotes from auto insurance companies on the Internet, you will still find that the range of prices is just similar. You are asking why this is so.
Teen auto insurance premiums cost more than the usual auto insurance policy for the reason that auto insurance companies are trying to protect their investments when they insure a teen driver, and for good reason. Statistics show that there are more incidents involving teen drivers in car crashes than there are incidents involving people from other age groups. There are a lot of theories why this is so, like teenagers tend to be more reckless on the road compared to their adult counterparts. Whatever the case is, teenage drivers are considered high risk drivers by the auto insurance industry, and there is nothing we can do about this.
The only thing we can do something about is how we are going to lower the amount of what we are going to pay for our teen kids’ auto insurance, especially if we are on a tight budget.
One is including your teen driver in your existing auto insurance policies because this enables you to have multidriver discounts. Next, you should have your kid enrolled in a basic driving course, or have your kid get good grades in school, because this will make auto insurance companies there in Alaska think that your kid is a responsible driver.
So, just remember these pointers because even though the prices of auto insurance premiums for teen drivers are expensive, you can still make them low.

Car Insurance Law Alaska AK
Reader’s Questions:
I got into an accident, and it was the other guy’s fault. He isn’t covered. What should I do next? Can I punch him? I live in Alaska.
William
Anchorage, AK
The best way really is to protect yourself against such unfortunate events. It would be best if you do something on your end and not rely on somebody else’s insurance policy. The essence of getting auto insurance and paying premiums (no matter how hard it hurts our pockets) is to protect ourselves in the events of accidents, so that whoever may be at fault, we know that we don’t have to worry about damages and lawsuits because we are insured.
But I see your point. I am even of the opinion that a guy who doesn’t have insurance coverage should not be allowed to drive at all. But don’t go punching anybody just yet. Alaska has laws to protect us. We have traffic and safety laws that are in place to deter and discourage these guys from committing road-related crimes. Also, there is a specific type of insurance that deals with exactly this kind of problem. If you want to guard against damages from uninsured guys, then tell your insurance agent to add an uninsured/under-insured provision in your policy. Because if you don’t have this, even if you sue the guy and win the case, there is still no guarantee that he will be able to cough up the money.

Teen SR22 Auto Insurance Anchorage, Alaska AK
Reader’s Question:
How can I save on my son’s tenn SR22 insurance policy in Anchorage, Alaska?
Helen
Anchorage, AK
I suggest that you try lowering your son’s SR22 insurance or get a cheaper auto insurance for him by enrolling your son to the driver’s education course or you may try enrolling to defensive driving class. Your son may be able to get an auto insurance discount from his car insurance providers if he will take these classes however the defensive driver’s education class should not be part of the reinstatement process or ordered by the court.
Be sure you contact your automobile insurance agent first to find out which defensive driver’s education class you can take and from where. If you take the wrong defensive driver’s education class you might not get a car insurance discount on her teen SR-22 insurance policy.
