Car Insurance Law Alaska AK
Reader’s Questions:
I got into an accident, and it was the other guy’s fault. He isn’t covered. What should I do next? Can I punch him? I live in Alaska.

The best way really is to protect yourself against such unfortunate events. It would be best if you do something on your end and not rely on somebody else’s insurance policy. The essence of getting auto insurance and paying premiums (no matter how hard it hurts our pockets) is to protect ourselves in the events of accidents, so that whoever may be at fault, we know that we don’t have to worry about damages and lawsuits because we are insured.
But I see your point. I am even of the opinion that a guy who doesn’t have insurance coverage should not be allowed to drive at all. But don’t go punching anybody just yet. Alaska has laws to protect us. We have traffic and safety laws that are in place to deter and discourage these guys from committing road-related crimes. Also, there is a specific type of insurance that deals with exactly this kind of problem. If you want to guard against damages from uninsured guys, then tell your insurance agent to add an uninsured/under-insured provision in your policy. Because if you don’t have this, even if you sue the guy and win the case, there is still no guarantee that he will be able to cough up the money.
